How and where does Drupal fit in the CMS market?

The web CMS market is commonly segmented into 3 tiers:

  • Top tier - large enterprise level proprietary CMS's such as Interwoven Team Site, Vignette Content Management Server, Stellent Web Content Management. These a very sophisticated products and are expensive to licence and implement. They are generally part of larger Enterprise Content Management suites including EDMS, EDRMS, Digital Asset Management, and collaboration components.
  • Mid tier - Plone, Drupal, MySourceMatrix, Silverstripe, EpiServer, Kentico, Sitecore, Ektron, MOSS WCM. These have licence fees anywhere from $0 to $200k-ish, some are open source, and some are proprietary. They operate in the global market and have broad communities of vendors/implementers.
  • Lower tier - Joomla, DotNetNuke, Wordpress and others. These are simpler products and are good for smaller sites (50 - 500 pages)

The mid-tier is currently the most dynamic part of the CMS market. For New Zealand it is the level that is suitable for most corporates and government agencies. It is still in its growth phase and is only just entering the consolidation phase that the top tier has been in for the last 3-4 years.

How does Drupal fit in the mid tier of the CMS market? How does it compare to the other mid-tier products (both FOSS and proprietary)? What are its strengths and weaknesses from a functional, technical, and sales point of view?

This session will answer these questions and will help those implementing and selling Drupal solutions learn how to better compete against other products and platforms.
